The Milwaukee Electrical Training Institute (METI) is a partnership between IBEW Local 494 and the NECA Milwaukee Chapter. We offer hands-on, earn-while-you-learn training programs that lead to in-demand careers in the electrical trades. Every program is union-backed, tuition-free or low-cost, and designed to get you on the job quickly — with a long future ahead.
We offer three pathways:
Inside Construction: Commercial and industrial electrical systems.
Residential Construction: Homes, apartments, and service work.
Sound & Communication: Low-voltage systems like security, fire alarms, and data wiring.
COST & PAY
There’s no upfront tuition, and most students graduate with no debt. Some programs may have minimal fees for books or tools. Apprenticeship students don’t pay tuition for their first three semesters — the period when they’re earning the least — and pay manageable costs later. All programs allow you to earn while you learn, so you’re getting paid from the start.
Yes. Every METI program includes on-the-job learning with real wages and benefits. You’ll earn while you build your skills — not after.
ELIGIBILITY & REQUIREMENTS
Anyone 18 or older with a high school diploma or GED can apply. You’ll need to be authorized to work in the U.S. and have reliable transportation.
No. We’ll teach you everything you need to know. Just bring a strong work ethic, willingness to learn, and a positive attitude.
Basic math skills are important, especially algebra and measurements. Some applications include a math quiz. But don’t worry — if you’re rusty, there are ways to study and brush up.
Some programs require basic hand tools. You’ll receive a list if needed. We’ll guide you on what to buy and when.
